History of PISA

Before PISA, there was APISU (Asian Pacific Islander Student Union), which was created to recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander students. However, six students felt the need for a club that specifically focused on Pacific Islander students. While they cherished Asian American cultures, they noticed that Pacific Islanders were often grouped with Asian Americans but rarely received the recognition they deserved.

Amid the challenges of COVID-19 in 2020, these six students came together to create what is now known as PISA. Their goal was to provide Pacific Islander students with a space where they could truly be themselves and share their culture with the UW Tacoma campus.

All About us

Despite the pandemic, they didn’t let obstacles stand in their way. Through countless Zoom meetings and remote collaboration, they successfully planned events like Multicultural Night in February and Luau in May, continuing to grow PISA even before in-person gatherings were allowed.

Without the determination and courage of these six founders, PISA would not exist today. A heartfelt thank-you to Matavai Asaeli, Exita Lealofi, Rinalyn Fetuao, Valomanaia Elizarraraz, Ja’iShon Berry, and Fuifui Ah Kuoi for their dedication in creating a space where Pacific Islander and Polynesian students can connect, celebrate their identities, and feel a sense of belonging among peers who share similar backgrounds.
